Candice: 2 Summers Ago
August 11th, 2010 Going Places, Memories, Motherhood & PregnancyTags: Candice, Cavite, Days Hotel, Tagaytay
Time flies.
This picture was taken 2 summers ago in Tagaytay City. Candice was about 6 months old and still kalbo and bilog. It was my first time to be away since I got pregnant with her in January 2007. I was like a bird that’s flown out of a cage. I was so happy.
We were checked in at Days Hotel – Tagaytay for about 2 days. My husband and his colleagues gave a seminar to public school teachers. We were “part of the package” so we got hotel accommodations, too.
Can’t wait to go out of town once again. Yeah, getaway agad ang nasa isip. Haha. I’m already dreaming of another Tagaytay trip — maybe 3 months after I give birth to Baby 2.

Pak That Fly
July 23rd, 2010 Daily LivingTags: Candice
This is quite recent. Wish I could record every conversation I have with my 2 y.o. She’s such a chatterbox now. And I love it when she tries to make sense of a lot of things without my intervention.
Me: Candice, what are you doing to THAT fly?
Candice (running around): I’m trying to pak it, Mommy.
Me: What do you mean?
Candice: I’m paking the fly, Mommy. Like this … PAK!
Me: Oh.

Let Go
March 29th, 2010 Parenting & KidsTags: Candice, outdoor play, playground, slide, toddlers, videos, Water Camp
A few months after I gave birth to Candice, my eldest sister sent me a book about child development. I read about infant-toddler behavior, caregiving, toddler activities, and the developmental benefits of outdoor playgrounds. The last topic never escaped my memory since. And so, by the time Candice reached toddlerhood, I made it a point to bring her to an outdoor playground at least twice or thrice a week. Apparently, the swing helps children develop a good sense of balance; the monkey bars help them develop strong bones and make them grow taller; and the slides teach them to wait for their turn, to take the risk and let go.
Let go.
It’s only recently that I finally let Candice slide down the slide. I’ve been too afraid that she might roll down and get hurt. When we were at Water Camp, I checked on the safety of the slides first before letting her play. She seemed ready for it, climbing up the stairs and letting herself fall down. Big girl na talaga siya. Sigh.

Fun at Water Camp
March 25th, 2010 Going PlacesTags: Candice, Cavite, G, Kawit, resorts, summer, swimming, vacation, Water Camp
After weeks of enduring the early summer heat, we finally drove to a nearby resort and took the plunge. We set off at around 7 in the morning of March 19, packed lunch in trunk, and with a sleepy baby on board. (I actually had to pack her breakfast so she wouldn’t have to swim on an empty stomach.) On the way, we thought we’d get caught in the usual Friday traffic. But surprisingly, we got there in less than an hour. We took the path that snakes its way through Imus proper. That route is a joy for me, because it includes a good view of old houses built during the Spanish era. I fed Candice teaspoonfuls of rice and corned beef while I oohed and aahed over those antiquated houses.
We reached Water Camp at 8 a.m. G made arrangements with the resort management days before so we were, uhrm, given special treatment as soon as we got there. The Punzalans gave us a room in this neat villa situated very near the pool. Candice was so ecstatic upon entering the premises. She kept yelling “Swimim na! Swimim na!” She was jolly jumping in bed, still wearing her pambahay clothes.
It was Candice’s first time to visit Water Camp. Gino and I are second-timers. I was glad to see the same pool that runs through a round-the-clock filter. The service and the ambiance did not change. The local staff are ever friendly and courteous. The resort is clean and orderly. What more, there are trees everywhere! It’s like you’re swimming in a flowing stream surrounded by flora and fauna. (OK – there was no fauna.)
We were ready to go dipping in less than 15 minutes. Father and daughter went ahead of me. The water was COLD. It was like swimming in an enclosed body of water that’s not getting enough warmth from the sun. I slathered SPF30 all over Candice’s body before I let her slip into her airplane floater. I’m thankful for this floater, by the way. It’s got smooth leg holes that somehow secure your baby on the pool. Unlike the usual round floater, this one lets you save some energy because you won’t have to hold on to your toddler all the time. You just let her tread and kick and tread and kick. You can get this floater at SM for PHP170.
^ This long and narrow lazy river is about 3 feet deep — relatively safe for elves, trolls and giants.
After about 2 hours of swimming, we dried up and had a hefty lunch (you wouldn’t believe how much I ate!). Candice and G took their naps. I wasn’t too sure if I had a good one. I was deeply troubled by the tsk-tsk-tsk’ing of a lizard that’s probably stationed somewhere near my pillow.
We went swimming for another hour before finally calling it a fun day. I wish I had more time at the pool, but I was too careful not to overdo things. Candice enjoyed the water, the playground, the people. My dear husband, as usual, got TIRED. Heh heh. I hope we could go swimming again before summer ends.
Water Camp is a family-friendly resort. Alcoholic drinks are prohibited. Horsing around at the pool is highly discouraged. (Lifeguards blow their whistles every now and again.) Water Camp is for those who just want to swim, eat, sleep, cool down and/or chat. It’s the only nearby resort that I’m very fond of.
Have you been to any resort in Cavite? How was it?

Allergies
January 14th, 2010 Things & StuffTags: allergies, antihistamine, Aveeno, Candice, Cetaphil, Dove, Nivea, Pigeon
I wish I could easily replace my nose at this time of year. I’ve been dealing with a clogged nose since November. (Well, since I was young, actually.) Apparently, I suffer from seasonal allergic rhinitis. My nose reacts strongly to everything once the cold weather sets in. I normally abuse myself with antihistamine drugs and my trusty nasal spray when dealing with this dilemma. This time, though, I’ll have to skip the usual prescription and just bear with the discomfort. Why? I’ll explain later.
And speaking of allergies – Candice’s eczema is trying to make a comeback. I’ve been at war with this skin disease since November. It seems that my little girl has inherited her dad’s sensitive skin. I’ve had her on salt baths (NSS compress), antibiotics, antihistamine, and steroids for almost 2 months. Her skin got better for a while. But just a few days ago, I noticed some chapping again. And then, the wounds are there again. What’s a mother to do? I’m giving her steroids + antibiotics again. And, yes, the usual salt bath. I hope the wounds heal soon. The poor girl’s been rubbing her itchy right pinkie on every surface. Kawawa naman.

Upon the dermatologist’s recommendation, I got hypoallergenic bath and body products for Candice. I use Cetaphil cream and Nivea hypoallergenic soft cream to moisturize her body. I use Cetaphil gentle facial cleanser on her face. Her clothes are rinsed using Pigeon’s hypoallergenic fabric conditioner. I’ve yet to find a hypoallergenic detergent at the hypermart, though. Maybe when I get the chance to visit stores in Alabang, I’ll be able to find one.
Some moms have recommended Aveeno and Dove products. Unfortunately, they’re not available at the nearest supermarket. Have you tried Aveeno/Dove on your babies? Is it better than Cetaphil? I’d appreciate your feedback. In the meantime, I’ll have to stick with whatever I can get.
Now, for my nose replacement …

Dicey loves to sing

The little girl sings Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star *at least* once a day. It’s the very first song that she learned to sing in full.

I want this, not that
November 13th, 2009 Parenting & KidsTags: Candice, Toddler Two, toddlers
Okay, I will have to agree on the “surprising” changes that occur when a child turns two. I have witnessed a lot since October came in. And even until now I notice some developmental steps and leaps that make my daughter a true Toddler Two. Yup, that’s the label I prefer to assign her at this stage. While the label “Terrible Two” seems apt, it encloses a lot of negative things which I do not really see as terrible.
I’m aware that my child is going through a lot of changes in her life. She’s become aware of many things, but she’s yet to learn how to properly deal with her feelings. I too am going through a lot of changes. When before the play-eat-sleep schedule was normally designed by yours truly, some cute ideas are now being proposed and preferred by the Little Lady. Every day compromises are made, deals are done, and rules are imposed. I am actually re-learning patience and reminding myself too often to empathize with my child.

My Toddler Two now asserts herself (quite strongly) and says “No!” when she doesn’t want it and “More, please!” and “Good!” when she likes it. She has also established her own preferences for some things. For example, she often refuses to wear a dress when she’s at home. Whenever she sees me picking out a dress after she’s taken a bath, she says “No dress! Shorts, please!” and then grabs the dress and puts it back into the cabinet. At times when we have to go out she will agree to wear a dress, but she has to be the one choose the pair of shoes that will go with the outfit.
Of course, most things are still under my marmee-ish control. But with matters such as snacks and fashion, I can let her exercise her decision-making skills. I want her to learn to decide for herself. She’ll be doing a lot of that when she grows up.
Sigh.

Soon-to-be Toddler Two
September 5th, 2009 Parenting & KidsTags: Candice
It’s been more than a month since I last made a post. I think I lost track of the days and weeks that came in since July. And now I have a whole month’s worth of backlog. The month of August was actually a very busy month for my family. New projects came in. Important decisions were made. Many changes are definitely afoot. I hope to be able to sweat some details in my future posts.
Anyway, I’d like to mark this comeback post with a few details about Candice. Yes, she’s grown so much since July. We visited the pedia last week for a checkup and a shot of penta-booster. At 22 months, she already weighs 12.2 kgs (the avg 2 y.o. weighs 12 kgs). Her growth chart is looking good, too.
She’s been busy with a lot of play-and-learn activities. By the end of July, she has learned to recite and read ALL the letters in the alphabet. She started learning about letters as early as last year. It was also in July (or earlier) when she learned to identify and recite the numbers 1 to 12. We’re currently helping her learn more numbers and a few three-letter words. But all in the guise of fun. I don’t want her to get tired of “schoolwork” so early in her life. Now that she’s about to turn Toddler Two, I try to give her as much as exposure as possible. I let her play with the neighbors’ kids. I let her run and stumble. I bring her to talipapa, to the playground, to Meralco. She’s generally a well-behaved kid, so I don’t worry much about tantrums. I just have to deal with her emotional side every now and then. She’s a toddler who’s going through a lot of changes. And because she’s just learning to utter two- to three-word phrases, I try to read between the lines and understand as much toddlerspeak as I can.
The photo above shows Candice playing with party stuff. It was taken during the 1st birthday celebration (August 29) of my high school batchmate’s baby boy. We hope to bring Candice to more social events as she gets older.
All for now. I hope to write more after I get rid of this bad cold. Enjoy the long weekend!
